I’m Zsolt Derka, a CGI artist and digital innovator, working to change how we communicate health information. My work, recognized by LĂĽrzer’s Archive in their ‘200 Best Digital Illustrators Worldwide’ selection, brings a unique blend of technical skill and artistic vision to medical advertising.

A Fusion of Art and Science

My signature style fuses surreal artistry with a candid lens, an approach backed by scientific research. A study in Frontiers in Neuroscience found that surreal elements in advertising lead to ‘stronger and more sustained attention, as well as increased emotional engagement.’ This combination creates a powerful tool for conveying complex medical information while fostering an emotional connection with viewers.

The Power of Digital Human Actors

At the heart of my process is the creation of hyper-realistic digital human actors. This innovative approach addresses a significant challenge in pharmaceutical advertising: representing diverse patient populations accurately and sensitively, without the limitations of traditional casting. Here’s how it works:

1. Modeling

We begin by establishing the demographics of our digital actor – age, gender, ethnicity, and any visual characteristics associated with specific medical conditions. For instance, we can accurately represent conditions like Acromegaly, where individuals develop enlarged hands, feet, and chest, or Trichomegaly, characterized by unusually long eyelashes.

2. Motion Capture

Advanced motion capture technology records the performance – the pose, interactions, and emotions – of a real person, ensuring our digital actors move and express themselves naturally.

3. AI Enhancement

AI processing refines the digital model, perfecting details like skin texture and micro-expressions. This step is crucial in overcoming the ‘uncanny valley’ effect, making our digital humans indistinguishable from real people.

Beyond Realism: Abstract Visualization

But realism is just the starting point. I digitally sculpt and paint abstract representations of diseases and treatments, integrating them seamlessly with our digital humans. This combination of tangible and conceptual elements fosters a more intuitive understanding of complex medical information. As noted in the journal Health Communication, ‘Visual communication can overcome literacy barriers and improve comprehension of health information.’

The result is a harmonious blend of human relatability and abstract visualization. Our digital actors convey the emotional reality of living with a condition, while the integrated CGI elements illustrate complex medical concepts in a way that’s both visually striking and scientifically accurate.

Flexibility and Authenticity

Flexibility is key to my approach. While digital actors offer tremendous advantages, there are times when featuring real individuals can powerfully authenticate a campaign. In these cases, I collaborate with specialized photographers to capture authentic images, then meticulously recreate the onset lighting conditions to seamlessly blend CGI elements with the real photography in post-production.
